Meeting held on July 26, 2011

written by Mark Kemp

Our guest speaker on July 26, 2011 was Heidi Anderson of Credit Cares.  Heidi provides two valuable services to charitable organizations:  1) She provides merchant account services at her cost, so that the charity can save up to 30% processing credit card transactions; and 2) she allows for-profit businesses to support qualified 501(c)(3) charitable entities by giving 20% of the processing fees they incur to the non-profit entity of their choice.

As a result, any business can support Civitan International by setting up their merchant account through Credit Cares.  Amazing!

At our meeting held on June 28, 2011, our guest speaker was Sandy Marsh of Foreclosed Upon Pets.  Foreclosed Upon Pets started three and one-half years ago in October 2008 and obtained its 501(c)(3) status in 2009.  Foreclosed Upon Pets holds adoption events every Saturday at seven different Petsmart locations.  All pets are spayed/neutered and have a microchip.  The adoption fee is $150.00, and a one week trial adoption costs only $75.00.

Foreclosed Upon Pets is one of 45 animal rescue organizations in Las Vegas, but they are not “breed” specific.  All breeds are welcome.  They have “re-homed” over 1,000 pets so far.

To see the pets that are up for adoption each week, check out the website at www.forecloseduponpets.org.

End of Miracle League Spring Season

written by Mark Kemp

The Miracle League Las Vegas 2011 Spring Baseball Season ended today, and we packed up the Liberty Swing after eight weekends of  offering rides to the baseball players, family members, friends, one Ninja turtle, Cosmo – the Area 51 mascot, and even Mayor Oscar Goodman (who still refuses to climb into the swing).

Please remember that the Liberty Swing is on a mobile trailer, so we can travel to area events throughout Clark County.

Meeting held on February 22, 2011

written by Mark Kemp

At our meeting on February 22, President Manny Arias reported that we had 19 volunteers attend our monthly service project at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.

Our guest speaker this month was Jimmy Lee, the owner of International Auto Body located at 4350 S. Arville #30, Las Vegas, Nevada (Flamingo and Arville to the South of the Palms Casino).

Jimmy revealed to the members that a car is “totaled” for insurance purposes when the cost to repair exceeds 65% of the market value of the car.  Jimmy also identified the 24 steps that must be completed for a car to be repaired.

Jimmy also provided a guideline to answer the question “when will my car be ready?”  If the cost of repair is $1,000.00, expect to wait 5 days.  If the cost of repair is $2,000.00, expect to wait 10 days.  Even for a fender bender, expect to wait 3 days minimum because there has to be one day for the body work, one day to add primer (because the new paint cannot be placed on the old paint), and one day for the new paint to dry.

Jimmy also warned us to never have your car towed to the impound lot, but have it delivered to a repair shop instead.  When changing your oil, Jimmy said that using synthetic oil is better and that some shops use “recycled” oil.
